Who said we should take action?
The Hobart community.
- 87 per cent of people surveyed across Hobart said they are concerned about the effects of climate change on Hobart.
- 79 per cent want the City of Hobart to be highly ambitious in reducing emissions to address climate change.
In 2024, the City endorsed the Climate Ready Hobart Strategy. An ambitious roadmap to help us shape a zero emissions and climate resilient future by 2040.
Before setting goals and actions, the City spent more than a year listening to people who live, work and play here.
This strategy was shaped together by the community and grounded in the best available evidence.
Key stats from our engagement
Our engagement consisted of:
- 1084 face-to-face conversations
- 300+ survey responses
- 240 staff and community attendees across workshops
- 120 conversations with young people at schools, youth groups, drop-in centres and in the community
- 9 hours of co-design workshops
- the first climate assembly in Tasmania.
What we heard was:
- 87 per cent of survey respondents are concerned about the effects of climate change on Hobart – 62 per cent are very concerned, 25 per cent are concerned
- 79 per cent of community respondents want the City of Hobart to be highly ambitious in reducing emissions to address climate change
- 87 per cent of respondents feel either very or somewhat informed about the effects of climate change on Hobart – 32 per cent felt very well informed, 55 per cent felt informed
- 94 per cent of young respondents are concerned about climate change – 56 per cent are very concerned, 38 per cent are concerned
- 50 per cent of business respondents want the city to be highly ambitious, 41 per cent moderately ambitious, no business said we should do nothing.
Listening to the community
We heard from around a thousand people across Hobart through surveys, workshops, school visits, pop‑up conversations and community events.
People told us they:
- are worried about climate change
- want Hobart to be ambitious
- expect everyone, particularly local leaders, to act.
To go deeper, we convened Tasmania's first Climate Assembly. 33 everyday people from across Hobart came together over four days to learn, discuss and carefully weigh up options. The group ranged from students and renters to retirees, parents, tradespeople and business owners. They heard from climate scientists, planners and council staff. The Assembly asked tough questions, didn't always agree, and ultimately found strong common ground.
Their message was clear: act urgently, aim high, and work together.

Guided by evidence
At the same time, the strategy is firmly evidence‑based. It draws on:
- the latest climate science
- a detailed climate risk and vulnerability assessment for Hobart
- emissions data and modelling
- expert advice from universities, practitioners and community leaders.
This ensured community priorities were matched with actions that will make the biggest difference for emissions, resilience, fairness and liveability.
A shared plan for Hobart
The Climate Ready Hobart Strategy reflects what the community told us matters most – and where we can have the greatest impact.
It sets shared goals and responsibilities for the City and the community, because becoming climate ready isn't something the City can (or should) do alone.
In short: this is Hobart's plan, shaped by community voices and guided by evidence, to protect what we love about our city, now and for future generations.
